branched hierarchy

A branched hierarchy presents multiple paths that can be taken to drill down to the bottom level in the hierarchy.

For example the layers in a hierarchy can be displayed in the following layer combinations where suburb is the bottom level in the hierarchy: Country, City, Suburb. Country, Region, Suburb.
